LUMINALIA

Piazza Tevere, between Ponte Sisto and Ponte Mazzini, Rome, Italy

Year:
2007

Dimensions:
1800′ L

Materials:
1000 Fiaccole – Flames that burn for up to 15 hours.

On the eve of Rome’s birthday, a thousand floating flames aligned in single file, animated by the downstream current of the Tiber River at Piazza Tevere. The immense serpentine form of Luminalia was brought to life by the water’s undulating surface. The dancing flames burned through the night and well into the morning, drawing the path of the moving water in fire.

Luminalia was created in collaboration with architect Daniel K. Brown and accompanied by a unique program of instrumental and electro-acoustic music, presented over the course of the evening.
